During the attack on Al-Hussein Camp, I was fighting in Wahdat Camp, a Palestinian refugee camp south of Amman, near where the hostages were being kept. We remained in contact with all the fronts. The defense of the camps was HIJACKED! • 29 carried out by fighters from the PFLP, Fateh, and armed civilians. A united command of Fateh and PFLP leaders was established in every refugee camp to lead the fighters. Arafat, whose office in Amman had been evacuated, joined the fighters to defend the positions and helped to place barricades at the Maxim Roundabout (now called Firas Roundabout) in Jabal Al-Hussein.

Most of our weaponry was long range enough to just reach the Jordan River from where we were positioned, but the longer distance limited the amount of damage we could inflict on the Israeli forces. When the fighting had intensified between us and the Israeli forces, the Jordanian ground forces joined in, along with their long-range heavy artillery cover. It was very clear to me that Jordan had wanted to make sure Israel would not enter any farther into Jordan under the pretense of attacking our troops.

He drove sports cars and liked to spend his vacations in Lebanon, like most rich Arabs. By the early 1960s, however, Arafat had started mobilizing and organizing the Fateh movement. Most of its founding members had neither purely secular nor religiously fanatical tendencies. During the early 1960s there had been serious clashes between Israel and Syria over Israel’s plans to divert Syrian water sources to Israel. In particular, the Al-Tawfique region on the border between the two countries experienced heavy artillery fighting in 1964.
