Have students make a simple model by using their hands and spreading their fingers wide. A class of fifth graders, for example, can follow similar procedures when studying rocks. Students, in groups, try to find out which of the rocks is sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic. They read and follow the information found in their textbook, examine their 42 CHAPTER 2 rocks, discuss rock characteristics with their team, plan, compare, test the rocks, describe each rock, illustrate the rocks, and explain how they decided which rock characteristics belonged to each rock.
